'Dive Into History' With The Nautical Archaeology Society

Ian Barefoot, Project Officer at the Nautical Archaeology Society will be making a presentation on nautical archaeology and hertiage at the Dry Meeting on 5^th Febuary '08 at St Andrews Social Club.

This promises to be a fascinating talk which will appeal to those interested in wreck sites and it also covers the foreshore, inland waters and canals - make a note in your diaries!

"Dive Show 2007, NEC Birmingham

This year's Dive Show at in Birmingham is almost here.

To be held 13th and 14th October at the NEC, Dive 2007 promises to offer all divers something of interest - with all the best holiday companies and diving kit, as well as seminars, try dive pools and BSAC's own stand and rebreather pool.

Club Events

Garret has been busy organising events for the club:

• For the October Dry Night, renowned author, photo journalist and Red Sea wreck expert Ned Middleton will be talking about his latest book Shipwrecks From The Egyptian Red Sea.  Ned's talks are famous in the diving world, and this is one event you should not miss!
   
• On Sunday 4th November, Garret has arranged for the club to visit 'B' flight of No. 22 Search and Rescue sqn. at their base at Wattisham.
  
  The Sea King helicopters of 22 sqn. are a familiar sight on the Norfolk coast, and this is a great opportunity to take a closer look.
  
  Availability is limited, so if you want to go along, please contact Garret.  If there is more demand than spaces available, names will be drawn from a hat.

Don't forget that the August dry night will now be a Bar-B-Q held at Sally & Ady Phillips house.

2007 AGM

The EAB11 AGM will soon be upon us – Tuesday 4th September – so now is the time to let Anne know if you would like to raise an agenda item or nominate someone (including yourself) for any of the committee positions. If you do nominate someone else, do first check that they are happy to stand for that role!

As always, agenda items must be confirmed in advance to allow members who cannot attend on the evening to submit their comments/votes. New agenda items cannot be accepted after 21st August.

As a reminder, the committee positions are as follows:

• Chairman
• Diving Officer
• Treasurer
• Secretary
• Vice Chairman
• Equipment Officer
• Membership Secretary
• Webmaster
• Search Editor
• Works Officer
• Social & Fund Raising Secretary

Plus the following roles, which are currently doubled up with other committee responsibilities:

• Expeditions Officer
• Welfare Officer

All roles are available and, if there is more than one candidate for a role, nominations are put to the Club vote. The Training Officer is selected by the Diving Officer (in line with current BSAC guidelines).

Being part of the committee is an excellent way to get to know everyone in the Club and also help shape its future direction – if you’d like to know more about what’s involved (either generally or with a specific role), please get in touch with the Anne, or the current role holder.

Anglian Diver launch date!

Following hundreds of hours of work by Rob Wade and boat team, the new Anglian Diver is almost ready to launch.

Rob will be running sea trials this weekend and, all being well, the boat is scheduled for it's first official launch from Sea Palling beach on the evening of Friday 1st June.

Everyone is invited to come along (bring the family!), see the boat, and have a spin in it (bring some suitable clothing, it may well be wet!), and then finish the evening with a pint at the pub.

The fun starts at 6 O'clock...make sure you're there.

Pool Night Dates

Norwich High School for Girls have completed refurbishment of their pool, and it's now available for club pool nights again.

The 3rd Thursday of the month will be pool night for the remainder of the year.

Congratulations...

...to Billy & Sarah McNally, on the birth of their daughter, Tiegan, who arrived at 9:22 on Friday, weighing a healthy 6lbs 1oz.

Both mother and baby are doing fine.  Rumours that Billy has booked Tiegan in for a try dive on Monday are not believed to be true.

Temporary pool closure

The Norwich High School for Girls pool will be closed, for the final part of the refurbishment, from 26th March until 3rd June 2007.

Although we will be looking for alternative facilities during this period, if you have any pool training to complete, or you want to check kit out before the start of the season then please make sure you do it before March 26th.

The NHSG pool is available, free of charge for club members, every Monday from 8:30 to 9:30pm.

Seasearch Observer Course

Information from Dawn Watson, the regional co-ordinator for Seasearch:

  " I'm trying to get together a group of people from East Anglian clubs to do the Seasearch Observer course (see www.seasearch.org.uk for details) this spring.

I'll be using a room at BT at Martlesham for the theory day, and going up to North Norfolk for the dives. We did this course with members of Sunstar and O2 a couple of years ago and it seemed to work really well. The details of this year's course are below:

The dates for the Seasearch Observer course have been set for the 5th and 6th of May. The theory day will take place at BT Martlesham on the Saturday and the diving will almost certainly be off North Norfolk (but not the Rosalie!) on the Sunday. Costs will be around £35 per person for the weekend if we do shore dives, a bit extra if we decide to use a RIB.

Places on the theory day are limited, so I will accept people on a first come first served basis. I would like a deposit of £20 per person, payable to me. If you really wanted to do this, but can't make the date, let me know. If there's enough interest, I'll run it again at the end of the season.

All questions and expressions of enthusiasm to or I might see you at the dive show on the Sunday.

February Dry Meeting

Next month’s dry meeting is on 6 February 2007. We have a great session lined up with Alex Woods, Port Manager at the Great Yarmouth Port Authority, coming to give us the low down on the EastPort development project. This is a major undertaking – come along to find out what’s involved and allay or confirm any concerns you might have about its impact.

Please note, there will be a change of venue for the February dry meeting – this will be held at St. Giles House, St. Giles Street, Norwich (see the diary for directions). Parking is readily available at St. Giles carpark, the Forum and on various surrounding side streets. It promises to be an excellent evening.

Divers’ Ball - 4 May 2007

This year we’re really pushing the boat out (excuse the pun!) and holding a swanky black tie dinner in a marquee at the North Walsham Rugby Club.

The event is open to members and non-members, so bring your family and friends for some excellent food, great entertainment and fabulous company! Help us to maximise ticket sales and raise funds for EAB11 by distributing our poster advertising the dinner.

Nitrox Workshops

Nitrox training is now included in the BSAC Ocean Diver and Sports Diver courses. For anyone who is already qualified, and does not have a Nitrox certification, we have arranged a couple of sessions so you too can become qualified to use Nitrox. Dates are on the training page.

Note, Ocean Divers must complete Nitrox training before they can start their Sports Diver course & Sports Divers must complete their Nitrox training before they can progress to Dive Leader. Workshop dates:

• Monday 12 February – For Ocean Divers
• Thursday 15 February – For Sports Divers and above.

If you simply want a refresher on your Nitrox training, or are an Instructor who would like to present this course in future, please attend the Thursday workshop.

If you are a trainee Ocean Diver, and have yet to complete your open water dives, then please come to the Monday session.

The training is FREE – there is just a small charge of £15 to cover the cost of your certification card.

Open Water Dives

Richard, our industrious Training Officer, has arranged some dates for open water dives at Gildenburgh. This is to enable the completion of Ocean Diver, Sports Diver and Dive Leader training.

Pool Nights

The pool at Norwich High School for Girls is now available for Club members every Monday evening between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

It’s a great opportunity to test out new equipment and brush up on your scuba or snorkelling skills before the season, but you’re also welcome to just come along for a swim.

Dry Night Bonanza!

Attendances at the dry nights have been rather low over the last few months so the committee (Garret in particular) are planning to provide some entertainment for every dry night in the future.

New Training Courses

Two new courses are on the training page.  A new Sports Diver course, and a Lifesaving Bronze Medallion course.

Norwich High School for Girls are requesting that we have Bronze Medallion Lifeguards at every session, and the club are using this an an opportunity to give a large number of our members an important skill.
